CONICYT

The National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research promotes, strengthens and disseminates scientific and technological research in Chile with the aim of contributing to the country’s economic, social and cultural development.

It was founded in 1967 under the government of Eduardo Frei Montalva, with Juan Gomez Millas as the Minister of Education. In the beginning, CONICYT’s main role was to provide direct advice to the Chilean President in scientific matters. Likewise, and throughout its history, CONICYT has supported the allocation of postgraduate scholarships, while also funding research and development projects. Moreover, it has played an important role in systematising scientific information, which is a vital foundation for continuing the generation of knowledge.

Currently, CONICYT focuses its efforts on promoting training of advanced human capital and on developing and strengthening Chile’s scientific and technological base, addressing regional development and international liaison as cross-cutting topics.

CONICYT is an autonomous public institution that belongs to the National Innovation system, administratively related to the Chilean Government through the Ministry of Education.

CONICYT’s Mission & Strategy

CONICYT's mission is to promote, strengthen and disseminate scientific and technological research and innovation in Chile so as to contribute to the country’s economic, social and cultural development.

In order to achieve its Mission, CONICYT carries out its actions by means of two strategic tenets. Each of these tenets seeks to achieve a specific goal:

Promoting the training of advanced human capital: visualising and foreseeing Chile’s needs for advanced human capital while articulating and boosting a comprehensive policy for training and funding advanced human capital with the purpose of increasing the amount of professionals holding a postgraduate degree, and also promoting a suitable job placement in universities, companies and the government.

Developing and Strengthening the Scientific and Technological Base: consolidating an articulated system for public support to basic and applied research, which is gradual in terms of the amount of allocated resources, the length of the initiatives supported and the degree of association, and the amount of researchers involved.
